Rust Ping Test

Measure your ping to the Rust regional entry point — then find out if it was lag, or you.

Measuring…

Region auto-picked from your location — tap another region to compare.

How this works: game servers don't answer web pings, so this times your browser's round trip to the game's regional entry point in the same city. Treat it as a rough reference only — real matches follow the publisher's own routing to a specific match server, so the in-game number usually differs. Calibration from side-by-side tests: for the same region, numbers here typically run about 30-80 ms above the ping shown in game, and on some entry points the gap can approach 100 ms. Trust the ranking between regions, not the absolute number. Warm-up first, then 6 samples, median shown.

What ping is normal for — Rust

RatingPingHow it feels
Beam Machine0–35 msAK sprays beam, ladders feel safe, door-camping is a science.
Wipe Day Fine35–70 msTotally playable — the standard for most community servers.
Hitreg Lottery70–120 msSprays feel random, ladders get scary, and raid defense is prayer-based.
Blame the Lag120+ msYou are not a player, you are a loot delivery — get the certificate.

Rust servers are run by Facepunch (official) plus thousands of community servers, and most tick at 30 Hz — half the rate of a typical FPS server. That makes every millisecond count double: on a busy wipe day, server FPS and population hurt you more than the ping number on the browser, so pick low-pop, well-hosted servers near you.

Lagging? Work through this list

  1. Use net_graph, not vibes — Open console with F1 and type net.graph 1 — it shows real ping and packet loss in-game, the only numbers that matter.
  2. Filter the server browser by ping — Sort by ping and set a max — joining a 150 ms "populated" server on wipe day is volunteering as content.
  3. Ethernet for raid nights — An ethernet cable is the biggest upgrade that is not a new GPU — WiFi jitter during a raid is how bases get lost.
  4. Avoid max-pop official on wipe hour — Fresh-wipe officials are lag festivals — a well-run community server nearby plays better at 200 pop than an official at 400.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ping for Rust?

Under 70 ms is the sweet spot; under 35 ms is beautiful. Above 120 ms PvP becomes a slideshow with extra steps.

Why is my ping different from what the game shows?

This test measures the round trip from your browser to our regional entry point, not to the game servers themselves. Treat it as a rough reference — in practice it usually reads about 30–80 ms higher than your in-game ping. Compare regions by rank, not by the absolute number.

Why is wipe day so laggy even with good ping?

Server FPS tanks under 400 players — the server itself cannot keep up, and no ping number fixes a struggling server.

Official or community servers?

Community servers near you, well-administered, almost always play better than distant officials — ping plus active admins beats brand name.
